Clashes erupt between two ethnic groups in Nairobi slum: AFP

Nairobi, Aug 13, 2017 (AFP)

Violent clashes erupted on Sunday between ethnic Luo supporters of defeated Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga and members of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Kikuyu group, according to AFP photographers.
The confrontation broke out after Odinga supporters torched businesses in the Kikuyu sector of the slum, after a Luo man was attacked.
An AFP photographer saw him lying on the ground, with blood seeping from his head.
Several hundred people then gathered on either side, armed with sticks, bows and arrows. Clashes followed in which a Kikuyu man was beaten, his head smashed in with sticks and a rock, according to a second AFP photographer.
Red Cross workers were unable to retrieve his motionless body due to the standoff between the rival groups.
The clashes came just hours after Odinga visited the slum to address supporters for the first time since his defeat was announced in an election he claims was massively rigged.
The election dispute sparked protests which have left 16 people dead in Odinga strongholds.
