Charlie Kirk’s alleged killer is not cooperating with investigators and has not admitted responsibility for the high-profile shooting, Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed during interviews with US media over the weekend.

Tyler Robinson, 22, was taken into custody Thursday night, approximately 33 hours after the fatal shooting of Kirk, a 31-year-old conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA. The incident occurred during an outdoor speaking event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, part of Kirk’s nationwide “American Comeback Tour.”

In an appearance on ABC News, Governor Cox revealed that while Robinson has yet to confess or provide a motive, several people close to him — including his roommate and romantic partner — have been cooperating fully with the authorities. Cox clarified that Robinson’s partner, who is reportedly transitioning from male to female, had no prior knowledge of the shooting and has been “incredibly cooperative.”

The governor also addressed reports, first published by The New York Times, that Robinson had joked about being the shooter in Discord messages sent after the attack. “All we can confirm is that those conversations definitely were happening,” Cox said. “It was all joking — until he admitted that it actually was him.”

According to an affidavit from the state of Utah, Robinson is being held without bail at Utah County Jail on charges of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice.

Cox has been vocal in his response to the tragedy, warning of rising political polarization and the toxic role of social media in amplifying extremism. Calling Kirk’s assassination a “direct assault on America,” he urged citizens and politicians alike to reflect on their role in fostering a healthier civic culture. “We need to look in the mirror and decide: are we going to try to make it better, or are we going to make it worse?” he asked during an interview with CNN.

The governor also stood by earlier comments he made to The Wall Street Journal, suggesting that Robinson had been “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology.” Pressed on this by CNN, Cox said the information came from friends and family of the suspect. “There’s so much more that we’re learning,” he added, noting that more evidence will be released when formal charges are filed.

Charlie Kirk, known for his combative right-wing rhetoric, was a polarizing figure in US politics. A close ally of former President Donald Trump, he championed conservative causes such as gun rights, opposition to abortion, and resistance to transgender rights. He also promoted debunked theories about the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing both passionate support and sharp criticism.

Kirk’s widow, Erika, delivered an emotional tribute on Saturday, thanking first responders and vowing that her husband’s voice “will remain.” A public memorial service is scheduled for September 21 at State Farm Stadium in Arizona, where Kirk lived with his wife and two children.

As the investigation continues, officials say they are interviewing Robinson’s acquaintances to better understand his motives. “We’re talking to everyone who knows him,” said Cox. “We’re trying to learn what really happened and why.”
